A Sense of Doubt blog post #1607 - That One Thing: "Going to California" - Musical Monday 1907.15

Just one thing today. "Going to California" by Led Zeppelin from their 1971 album Led Zeppelin IV.

Rolling Stone ranked it 11th on the greatest Led Zeppelin songs of all time.

I am not done with a new mix or my collection of favorite mixes post that I started, so today I want to make a quick post. Besides, I gave out some business cards at New Tech PDX last night and told people that I do a daily blog but that I was already a day behind, and now two as it's Tuesday night as I type and so this may not get posted until Wednesday.

Maybe.

I share this song as it came to my attention while listening to Moby's second memoir called Then It Fell Apart.

Near the end of the book (sort SPOILERS but not really), there's a scene in which Moby is DJing a sort-of 43rd birthday party in 2008, combined with other Virgo born people at a loft party. Moby started playing techno-electronic House dance music for a bunch of what he called "hipsters," but in the middle of the set, he stops the House record and starts playing Led Zeppelin's "Going to California" not just once, but twice, and refusing to give up control of the console as he sat crying with his closed while drinking.

"Isn't this song beautiful," Moby said to the DJ who came to rescue the plaintive, sad music confusing the hyped-up party crowd.

The scene nears the climax of the book, such as it is, in which Moby's life slips quite beyond his control and he's doing insensitive, self-serving things because he and his life are broken.

More on Moby's book in a full review soon, but for now, just this song.

Maybe I do get this up tonight, Tuesday. :-)

"Going to California" by Led Zeppelin

Spend my days with a woman unkind
Smoked my stuff and drank all my wine
Made up my mind, make a new start
Goin' to California with an achin' in my heart
Someone told me there's a girl out there
With love in her eyes and flowers in her hair

Took my chances on a big jet-plane
Never let 'em tell ya that they're aw-ooh-all the same
Hoh, the sea was red and the sky was grey
I wonder how tomorrow could ever follow today-hee
Mountains and the canyons start to tremble and shake
The children of the sun begin to awake
Now
Watch out

It seems that the wrath of the gods got a punch on the nose
And it's startin' to flow, I think I might be sinkin'
Throw me a line, if I reach it in time
Meet you up there where the path runs straight and high

Find a queen without a king
They say she plays guitar and cries and sings, la-la-la-la
Ride a white mare in the footsteps of dawn
Tryin' to find a woman who's never, never, never been born
Standin' on a hill in the mountain of dreams
Tellin' myself it's not as hard, hard, hard as it seems

- New note - On 1807.06, I ceased daily transmission of my Hey Mom feature after three years of daily conversations. I plan to continue Hey Mom posts at least twice per week but will continue to post the days since ("Days Ago") count on my blog each day. The blog entry numbering in the title has changed to reflect total Sense of Doubt posts since I began the blog on 0705.04, which include Hey Mom posts, Daily Bowie posts, and Sense of Doubt posts. Hey Mom posts will still be numbered sequentially. New Hey Mom posts will use the same format as all the other Hey Mom posts; all other posts will feature this format seen here.
