Hey, Mom! Talking to My Mother #1177 (SoD #1603) - Timeless Flow - me in costume 1967 - Throwback for Thursday July 11, 2019

Hey, Mom! Talking to My Mother #1177 (SoD #1603) - me in costume 1967 - Timeless Flow - Throwback for Thursday July 11, 2019

In this photo, I am standing in our cottage on Long Lake in Traverse City. The grill behind is the one my dad made to go around the heating unit. That's the kitchen to the left side of the picture and the white stool that was a constant fixture in our home, a piece of furniture that my mother must have bought either while we lived in Traverse City or even in Midland.

I see snow out the window, which means it's surely winter. I was about to pose a mystery, when I realized my math was wrong. This is 1967 not 1969. If I am 5 3/4 years old, this means the photo is from October-November 1967, unless that is not snow out the window and then the photo may have been taken a bit earlier. I had written 1969 here in the post, so I had to change it.

Why am I dressed up? I don't know. Probably just for play. A yellow umbrella? A toy gun? A shawl and a red hat. For years, the red hat was a common fixture in my play time. I believe I even wore it years later as part of a school costume. I loved that hat. I miss those simple times in which love of a single thing like a toy hat is one of the most important things in a day. Maybe I need to find my red hat?

Hello again, Here we are once more for throwback photos and random bits of things. I have quite an assortment in this grab bag package.

Speaking of grab bags, what's with that retail phenomenon to subscribe to a service that sends you a box of swag every month built around some theme? It seems like a way for retailers to unload inventory that's not moving on consumers who are more excited to receive it if in a surprise, grab bag type box, but would dismiss it and pass on buy if it was on a shelf in their local store.

Things like this:

https://www.cryptocurium.com/parcel-of-terror-subscription-box/

or here's a whole bunch of comic book ones....

https://www.cratejoy.com/box-insider/comic-and-anime-subscription-boxes/

My weekly surprise grab bag does not come in a box and can be viewed without the presence of a fox. It will not take up shelf space and will not have to find its place in your already cluttered home.

Scroll on and see. There's lots of material borrowed from Warren Ellis' excellent newsletter. After all, when isn't there this theme?

Starting with this:

So, stop to look at this amazing ceramic bowl with Aramaic magic inscription and let's get to it:

COMIC BOOK NEWSLETTERS

Of course, Warren Ellis gets a mention from Yeti at the link above. The image is from Brubaker's newsletter. Ellis' newsletter is as much about things other than comics as it is about comics. He is doing as much non-comics writing as writing in comics. Still, there's comics content in it, so it qualifies. It is by fair my favorite newsletter. Consider subscribing to Orbital Operations.

AND NOW THE NEWS........

I already posted the thing about using the Apollo Guidance Computer to mine bitcoin: HERE, just two days ago because it was too good to ignore. I liked this list of links, so I just decided to post them all.

And then this one, great news! YAY!!

GitHub Removed Open Source Versions of 'Deepfakes' Porn App DeepNude (vice.com)

Posted by BeauHD  from the cease-and-desist dept.

An anonymous reader quotes a report from Motherboard:GitHub recently removed code from its website that used neural networks to algorithmically strip clothing from images of women. The multiple code repositories were spun off from an app called DeepNude, a highly invasive piece of software that was specifically designed to create realistic nude images of women without their consent. The news shows how after DeepNude's creator pulled the plug on his own invention late last month following a media and public backlash, some platforms are now stopping the spread of similar tools."We do not proactively monitor user-generated content, but we do actively investigate abuse reports. In this case, we disabled the project because we found it to be in violation of our acceptable use policy," a GitHub spokesperson told Motherboard in a statement. "We do not condone using GitHub for posting sexually obscene content and prohibit such conduct in our Terms of Service and Community Guidelines."

The "Sexually Obscene" section of GitHub's Community Guidelines states: "Don't post content that is pornographic. This does not mean that all nudity, or all code and content related to sexuality, is prohibited. We recognize that sexuality is a part of life and non-pornographic sexual content may be a part of your project, or may be presented for educational or artistic purposes. We do not allow obscene sexual content or content that may involve the exploitation or sexualization of minors."

And from the THIS IS SO COOL department.

Astrophysicist Tries Machine Learning To Generate a Black Hole Movie (hpe.com)

Posted by EditorDavid  from the making-movies dept.

One of the scientists who worked on the black hole picture is now pursuing an even more ambitious visualization, this time for the super-massive black hole at the center of our own galaxy.

Long-time Slashdot reader Esther Schindler shares this report from Hewlett Packard Enterprise's Insights blog:Lia Medeiros, a physicist, astrophysicist, and National Science Foundation fellow, is working to put together a movie of sorts of a black hole, using data from the Event Horizon Telescope, a global telescope array that gave scientists the data needed to capture that first black hole image. And she's going to do it using machine learning... Scientists basically will be pitting Einstein's theory of general relativity, which tells us what we know, or think we know, about gravity, against the most powerful gravitational forces in the universe. It's about comparing these new black hole observations with predictions based on our mathematical models of them. And if general relativity doesn't fully hold up at the event horizon, then the theory may need to be rethought.

Her work also could tell us more about how quantum mechanics, which is still quite mysterious to the best physicists, interacts with the theory of gravity... Having a black hole movie could be a scientific game changer because they are one of the only types of objects in the universe that scientists need both theories to explain. Black holes, simply put, live at the intersection of quantum and gravity. Movies of a black hole could give scientists the information they need to see if they behave the way we expect them to, helping them figure out the complicated intersection of two major scientific theories.

And these.... worth a peek.

FROM ORBITAL OPERATIONS BY WARREN ELLIS

I recorded the three seconds of sound that accompanies the newly unveiled ident for Warren Ellis Productions. It will first be seen (and heard) at the end of the forthcoming third season of Castlevania on Netflix. You can read more about the visual side of the ident on Roger Strunk's site here. It is a very interesting read. You can watch the hi-res version here. You can listen to the music I provided for the ident here for free, along with three other proposed and discarded ideas. I've written about my recording process in the liner notes, so I won't repeat myself here. The recording was inspired in part by my STATION IDENT series.
will say that it's not only an honor to be a small part of the Ellis team, but also to be tangentially tied to the Castelvania franchise. I was around 10 years old and a ravenous video game enthusiast when the original Nintendo game was released, and I loved it. Still do. The music especially. This is sort of a full-circle thing that I'm still wrapping my head around. So thanks again to Warren for the opportunity. I am looking forward to the next season very much. (Already was, but now...)
I recently released twenty-five hour long non-music pieces under the ROOMS: A Series title. When that finished (?) with Room Twenty-five, I also released a compilation titled ROOMS: A Series, First Map, that took short segments from each Room, trimming the overall running time for the entire series down to, I think, a more manageable two hours. These aren't exactly radio friendly unit shifters, but at least they tick the running time boxes a bit more often.
I think that's enough for now. Thank you for your attention. Bye.

I picked up a new edition of ULYSSES to re-read the other week -- I don't think I've read it since I was around 20 -- and started it a couple of nights back.  Found these in the new (to me) long foreword:
Standing on the verge of modernity in 1800, Schlegel proved himself a prophet, in the sense of one who saw so deeply into the artistic conditions of his own time that the shape of future texts became discernible. He foretold the emergence of a new mythology, which would be less a radical act of creation than a ‘collaboration’ between old and new. Ancient myths embodied people’s immediate response to their physical experience and were not seen as fictive by their adherents; but the new mythology would be abstract and aware of its own fictive status. ‘It must be the most artificial of all works of art, for it is to encompass all others,’ he declared...
For Eliot, the method of Ulysses had ‘the importance of a scientific discovery’, and so he boldly declared that ‘instead of narrative method we may now use the mythical method’.
The mythic underpinnings of ULYSSES are largely invisible to the casual reader, which is why Joyce had to draw up fucking charts to explain his analogous structures for people.  But the "new mythology" -- which was a term independently invented several times over in the 20th century to explain things like superhero comics themes and continuities -- seems to me like a thing worth reconsideration here at the end of the second ten-trial decade of the 21C.
Now, check this out.  Steen Comer sent me this.  Don't currently have any more context than the tweet, but clearly I need to research this.  The original tweet.  Text and photo below:
The mammoth bone huts at Mezhirich near Kiev are ~15,000 years old. The base of each dwelling is a circle of interlocking woolly mammoth jaw bones. The bones for each dwelling weighed about 20 tonnes.

So, when I post at 10:10 a.m. PDT to coincide with the time of your death, Mom, I am now actually posting late, so it's really 1:10 p.m. EDT.
