A Sense of Doubt blog post #1384 - Concordia University - next semester

A Sense of Doubt blog post #1384 - Concordia University - WR121 - Tower - Winter 2019 semester

This is my blog entry to  prospective students interested in taking either of my Writing 121 classes in the Winter 2019 term at Concordia University.

Join me next semester (Winter 2019) for a magic carpet ride into new technologies, like robotics and nanotechnology; consumerism and capitalism; the self and consciousness; cities, places, and homes; and afrofuturism.

I am chris tower, a writer of stuff and a reader of many books, some illustrated and some not, some on paper, some digital, and some audio. I play Ultimatecycle, and walk my dogs.

I see all composition courses as tools to teach students to write academic, thesis-driven, persuasive essays with topic sentence structures.

To achieve this essay goal, I provide a variety of prompts to inspire students to explore subjects in depth, develop their critical thinking skills, take substantial projects with relatively complicated instructions and requirements from formulation to completion, and immerse themselves in the world of ideas, which are the intellectual pursuits of all college students and the mission of any liberal arts institution.

And I want to put the FUN in FUNKY while also encouraging students to QUESTION EVERYTHING, EMBRACE UNCERTAINTY, and BREAK THE MEDIA TRANCE!

Students seem to agree. Here's comments from an actual LOWER COLUMBIA COLLEGE student:

Hey Chris, just wanted to give some feedback and say that I am really enjoying the class. I have enjoyed the essays that we have done so far, although I have found them a little challenging. But I am glad that they are making me a better writer. I also wanted to say that I really like the aspect that you brought about how you are on our side. A lot of teachers I have had in the past never understood how school can be stressful sometimes when students have other things going on in their lives, so it's nice to finally have a teacher that does. So thank you for that. But anyways, I know you said you liked hearing feedback, so I just wanted to say I have really enjoyed the class. See you in class!

SATCHEL ALSO AGREES...

Satchel Paige Tower 1612.11
So, maybe things are going well in class. Listen to the power of quiet people.

So let's get into it. This is meant to be a short post about my plans for next semester. It's just a sketch, and a way to communicate what I am planning. The readings we do provide provide prompts for the essays we will write.

There can be no writing and no learning to write without BOOKS.

And comic books. I like comic books. But... WHERE ARE MY DAMN ROCKET BOOTS?

Or should I say graphic novels? Would that make it seem more adult?

So, here's my books for next term, Winter 2019.

Required Texts
·                     Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates - ISBN-13: 978-1925240702
·                     Culture Jam – by Kalle Lasn - ISBN-13: 978-0688178055
·                     Binti – by Nnedi Okorafor - ISBN-13: 978-0765385253
·                     Persepolis
·                    Alex + Ada: The Complete Collection by Jonathan Luna and Sarah Vaughn                                                  ISBN-13: 978-1632158697

With the books, I intend to step through the following content: education, racism, white privilege, and liberal arts; beliefs and persuasion and WEIRD SCIENCE; the current state of the nation and kairos; the self, becoming the self, individuality, AI, consciousness, and Jungian Psychologythe coming of age story and African cultures; and consumerism, capitalism, corporate control, Magritte and the Surrealists, the American culture, and mass media.

The first book we're going to read is Ta-Nehisi Coates' National Book Award winning letter to his son on what it means to be a young black man in today's world: Between the World and Me.

I plan to intersect this book with talks of race and racism, experience as a person of color for those who are, or confronting white privilege for those who, in Coates' words, "believe themselves to be white."

Students will write a letter to a family member or close friend in much the same way Coates's book is written to his son, investigating the racial landscape of their world but also providing advice about college, liberal arts education, and their future goals.

Students will examine the ways colleges promote themselves with slogans and memes and advertisements and answer the burning question that many try to answer for themselves and others: what's college for? AND Why do we go to college?

Category one subjects: Standard, academic thesis essay material. Subject conforms to problem-solution concept. BEWARE the pitfalls of popular subjects.

Category two subjects: Write a persuasive essay about a personal belief of yours that can be reduced to a simple motto.

The argumentation paper. No composition class exists without it. At all levels, teachers want students to conceive fresh and bold thoughts for which they argue, about which they attempt to persuade their poor unfortunate readers to feel as they do. Simple.
          Not really.

As the stalwart English instructor fighting the good fight, standing on the front lines, trying to help mold the minds of the students who pass through the educational transom, I have been traditional in my approach to the argumentation paper, despite overwhelming evidence that such an approach was failing. Part of the failure came from believing that students would forge ahead, boldly go, delve into new territories. I engineered the assignments adequately. I required source material found in actual libraries with shelves, books, and academic journals. I advocated clever brainwashing...er, I mean, BRAINSTORMING approaches to attempt to engender students to write exciting, fresh, original papers. In other words, not papers I had seen before, not papers that they had written about in high school, not the same old lame papers on abortion, teenage suicide, runaways, legalization of drugs, euthanasia, the death penalty, and a wide panoply of other bloodless topics that cause me dyspeptic fits.

But, alas, to no avail, as a silly young writer once wrote repeatedly.

Write a paper about something you believe in strongly, some motto you stick to that helps you live your life.

Here’s some ideas:

“Why being nice to people earns rewards”
“Secrets of my success”
“Why the five adjectives that best describe me can help you create the life of your dreams”
“The Golden Rule: My Number One Motto”
“Farting rather than holding it in and other ways I buck convention”
“Sharing: Why the world would be better if we all did it”
“Pants not skirts: utility is everything”
“Naps: Do you need more sleep than you’re getting”
“Embrace Uncertainty”
“Question Everything”
“Perform one random act of kindness and one senseless act of beauty each day”
“Shop ‘til you Drop: the joy of spending and NOT spending money”
“Find Joy; Bring Joy”
“Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff”
“Never grow up: Just don’t tell anyone”
“Honesty: the best policy”
“Dance your way to spiritual wholeness and happiness”
“Self Reliance and Civil Disobedience”

ANOTHER DISCLAIMER: You may have noticed that the majority of the paper titles reflect positive ideas about life and the universe. I prefer advocating the positive. However, if you really want to write something negative, then I encourage you to do so.

Much like Jonathan Swift’s “A Modest Proposal” in which he advocated ending the Irish potato famine by eating the children, these essays can be provocative and inspiring.

So if you’d rather write “Why I Hate People” or “Revenge can be sweet and very satisfying” or “Why men and women are incompatible” or “Ignore Authority: Why I should be King/Queen of the world” then by all means, go ahead.

CITIES - PLACES - SPACES- HOMES

I want to do a unit on cities. But not just cities. Places we live, places we claim for space, places we cultivate and grow food, and places we visit. HOMES. PLACES. SPACE.

I have been reading about SMART CITIES... Ecological design, Eco-cities, and the Hungry City, how food shapes our lives.I have also been thinking about community, home, neighborhood, borrough, village.

Back in the day, I loved playing Sim City. I would love to work that in if I can.

So many, too many things can and will be explored.

I have my new friend, professional partner, and colleague Amber Lemiere to thank for this genius idea and this content all of which can be found here: https://lemiere101fall.weebly.com/

I am planning to some of the content for sure, such as the two glimpses here. I am not sure how much of the content I will use and/or if I will invent new cities content (I probably will), but here's two bits that I love.

STEP 2: RIDE A CITY BUS (Or MAX)

And yes, you read that title right for Step 2. This week, or next week (you decide), you need to ride a city bus; if that dog can do it, so can you :) I don't care which one you ride, but there's a bus system in Longview, and it happens to make a campus stop; it's also free for you to ride as a student. If you click on the image below, it will take you to their website for more information. Part of the assignment is figuring out how to ride the bus (if you've never done it before); I'm not going to help because figuring it out is part of the experience. You are encouraged, however, to work together... maybe even ride together.

We will focus on PORTLAND not LONGVIEW.

From WIKIPEDIA

Plot[edit]
A young woman named Binti is the first member of the Himba ethnic group on Earth (closely modeled on the Himba people)[4] to be accepted into the prestigious intergalactic university, Oomza Uni. Upon being notified of her acceptance, Binti runs away from home and boards a transport ship to Oomza Uni. While in transit, the ship is hijacked by the Meduse, a jellyfish-like alien species that have previously been at war with the Khoush, another human ethnic group. After the Meduse murder all other inhabitants of the ship, Binti retreats into her private living quarters. She subsequently discovers that a piece of ancient technology she had brought with her from Earth, referred to as her edan, enables direct communication with the Meduse, and that her otjize, a type of mixed clay made from the soil of her homeland, has healing properties when applied to the tentacles of the Meduse. She makes a friend in one of the younger, more hot-headed Meduse, named Okwu, and subsequently brokers a tentative truce between herself and the hijackers. Upon arrival at the University, she is able to negotiate a lasting peace between the Meduse and the human race, after which she begins her studies at Oomza Uni in earnest. [5]

BINTI AND PERSEPOLIS

We will write some literary analysis. Late in the term, late because it's pretty easy but also sort of sophisticated, we will work on interpretation, deconstruction, coming of age stories (Bildungsroman), and the Hero Myth Cycle as defined through Jungian archetypes.                                                                                                                                                    We will read Nnedi Okorafor's novella Binti that won BOTH of science fiction's most prestigious awards: the Hugo (people's choice) and the Nebula (writers' choice).                                                                                                                    We will compare it to Marjane Satrapi's Persepolis, the autobiographical story of her years growing up in Iran and eventual move to Paris, France.                                                                                                                                        Persepolis has won many awards but has also faced controversy, as people and groups have tried to censor it.

PRACTICING ANALYSIS

We practice analysis with poetry, such as the most amazing EMILY DICKINSON

as well as the music of

KATE BUSH - "With this kiss, I pass the key"

and a comparison of "That's Entertainment" by the Jam and "Chicago" by Carl Sandburg.

And maybe some Magritte...

I ordered the $50 hard cover collected edition. But the digital copies and the individual volumes (three) of the paperbacks are in some cases 80 cents each: AMAZON.

Alex + Ada is about a future world in which someone can buy a robot companion. The robots do not have independent consciousness and are not what we would think of as "artificial intelligence" or AI; they are human-like but not conscious like humans. The robots start to find the path to consciousness, individuality, personhood, but the company that sells them does not want the robot servants, companions, and love slaves to be able to think for themselves.

This book opens up issues of the self, individuality, AI, consciousness, which I foment an new ideology through Jungian Psychology and other concepts, such as gender and relationships.

This one's going to be REALLY great. Here's tons of art.

Lastly, we will examine consumerism, capitalism, corporate control, the American culture, mass media, and the idea of CULTURE JAMMING with the book Culture Jam by Kalle Lasn, publisher of Adbusters.

Here's some of my thoughts...

The term "clutter and noise" comes to mind because it was featured in a documentary I used to show in my gender and media class called Dreamworlds created and narrated by Sut Jhally. He used the term to describe the flood of jump cuts, sound effects, music, and other "jolts" delivered in music videos to keep viewers engaged and to prevent them from changing channels.

For years in that Gender and the Media course, I taught the book Culture Jam written by Adbusters publisher Kalle Lasn, and now since switching courses I have taught the book in Effective College Reading. Despite being published in 1999, it's surprisingly fresh and relevant.

In fact, the evaluation of American consciousness as mentally ill is still accurate if not even more prevalent and common.

Early in the book, Lasn chronicles the landscape of postmodern mental health hazards in a section he calls "The Ecology of the Mind." He examines the mental pollution of "infotoxins" of the modern media-rich world of music videos, advertisements, TV, and more. This is the same panoply that Guy DeBord and the Situationists called "The Spectacle." Lasn describes modern media ecology in terms of noise, jolts, shock, hype, unreality, erosion of empathy, information overload, infotoxins, loss of infodiversity, and finishes the section by calling for an "Environmental Movement of the Mind" to restore peace and harmony to ourselves and our world by combating the mental pollution in which we are drowning (Lasn, 9-27).

adbusters_127_hollowman
As Americans and consumers, we're all terribly ill because our culture makes us mentally ill. At the beginning of "The Ecology of the Mind," Lasn describes the statistics of psychological ailments from which we Americans suffer. In counting the various illnesses, he concluded that 77% of the population "is a mess," calling us a nation of basket cases (In some cases, this claim does not apply to Lasn who is a Canadian -- Vancouver, Canada.) (Lasn, 9-27).

Lasn castigates consumerism as one of the culprits for America's "suffering" (which he criticizes as an embarrassing claim). "Plenitude is American culture's perverse burden" (Lasn, 11). He goes on to describe the quest for "MORE" to fill empty lives that seem to have "LESS." It's instant gratification that's the problem. Americans can gratify needs without having to wait, no denying their desires, no want, no hunger. "Eat the instant you're hungry," Lasn writes, "and, as the Buddhist master put it, "You will never find out what your hunger is for." Plenitude feeds the malaise as it fills the stomach" (Lasn, 11).

The idea of never feeling hunger is one that bears additional thought. Perhaps there are spiritual benefits to fasting after all.

Perhaps I need mental fasting. I need isolation. I feel as if I am suffering from a lack of simplicity and a disconnection from Nature.

Part of my problem is too much noise. We're drowning in noise. According to Lasn, "in 1996, The World Health Organization declared noise to be a significant health problem, one that causes physiological changes in sleep, blood pressure, and digestion" (Lasn, 13). Noise is still a problem in 2017. Maybe even more so.

I am sitting in the quiet now. I am not playing music. The TV is off. Nothing on the computer is jangling at me. I have muted notifications. I have not checked my phone in over an hour. And yet, the noise in my head has not been swept back into the sea; it has not been reclaimed by the tide and the undertow. I am still struggling to think clearly. I am still drowning in the clutter and noise.

adbusters_128_excavation
In 1999, in the writing of Culture Jam at both the end of the century and the millennium, Lasn commented that our culture was "stimulation addicted" (Lasn, 14). People want background music all the time. They cannot jog without ear buds and a Walkman. They cannot study without the TV on. Just think about how this passage would be updated today in the world of social media and smart phones. I live near a university. The majority of the students are literally on their phones all the time. Routinely, there's a lag now at traffic lights because the driver is looking at a phone screen and not the traffic light. Not a day goes by that I do not hear a driver honked at for sitting at an intersection with a green light. Sometimes I am the one honking. I see students looking at phones while the car is in motion or while they are walking through hallways and across campus. Dead time? Look at the phone. A lull in activity when nothing is captivating their attention? PHONE.

PHONE. PHONE. PHONE. PHONE. PHONE. PHONE. PHONE. PHONE. PHONE. PHONE. PHONE. PHONE. PHONE. PHONE. PHONE. PHONE. PHONE. PHONE. PHONE. PHONE.

RADICAL EVOLUTION - GRIN TECHNOLOGY AND MAKING COMICS

Not only will we read about AI and robots in a graphic novel, but we will read about AI, Robots, Nanotech, and genetics in a nonfiction book called Radical Evolution.

I am still formulating ideas, but I am going to create an assignment in which students write the script for a comic book depiction of a report on this book and technology.

There will also be a group assignment here in the form of a debate in some fashion. Not sure how that will work yet, but want to put it here so I don't forget since I already published this post without even including this part and so I had to go back and add it later.

Some last thoughts before you go if you got this far.

I am a gentle and loving soul in my approach to encouraging students and making them feel safe and comfortable to foster a thriving, supportive, and beneficial learning environment.

TO UNFREAK YOU ABOUT ENGLISH
- It's not algebra - English is something you use every day.

- PRACTICE, EXPOSURE, FEEDBACK, MOTIVATION

- You cannot learn everything about writing in one semester.
- Writing classes are not about your mistakes.
- We are not nit picky about grammar here ("writing  correctness").
- A writing class is like the Top 100 Album Chart From Rolling Stone magazine - you are at 25 - our goal is to at least get you up to 24th on the chart.

- PRAISE SANDWICH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

- Writing is like exercise - learning to play the piano; you know when you hit a bad note.

TO COMBAT FEAR OF ENGLISH -

I give advice for improvement in a praise sandwich format: encouragement and praise, advice for improvement, more encouragement and praise.

SOUND AND VISION AND THE BRAIN.

A Sense of Doubt blog post #1383 - I am not Dead - just tired and ugly - Shingy Life - Warren Ellis

I was really going to post original content today. Really. But Exams got in the way, so we moved them for "roads and newsprint and wreckage" (John Woods).

So, here's a share of Warren Ellis' latest rant from the future (as he published it Thursday 12/6).

It's a good one.

THAT SHINGY LIFE

One of the things that’s come to bother me over the last year is seeing people falling into constantly being on the road and giving talks, pausing only to dump a tweetstorm before going somewhere else and doing talks, week after week, month after month.  Not least because I worry they’re going to turn into Shingy.
You remember Shingy.  David Shing. “Digital prophet” for Oath, bats around the world as a brand ambassador, talking, talking, talking, making little sense and making no cultural mark.
During a half-awake session of link-surfing while full of flu meds the other week, I happened across the blog of one of those guys who was always doing talks and camps and streams and conferences and all the fucking rest of it.  He’s in his fifties now.  On his blog, he notes that he has tiny savings and even after downsizing he and his wife both need full-time income streams to keep the lights on and the kids fed.
Put another way — even a year ago, before his business hit some self-inflicted disasters, he would have had jack shit to show for that Shingy life.
(Because Shingy, you know, has been on a six-figure salary for years.)
Now, said guy has always been a braying idiot who was wrong about everything.  But I worry for the other people.
A thought for the new year: try to stay home for a bit and make some things that might last, please?
And yes, yes, I know, precarity, cobbled-together career skeins, gets harder all the time, freedom versus drowning in platform capitalism, I know.
But a privileged white man from Silicon Valley with an address list fatter than Ron Jeremy’s phone book did it all century and has fuck all to show for it, so how do you think that’s going to work out for you?

A Sense of Doubt blog post #1382 - That's Entertainment - Chicago edition - Musical Monday Mix for 1812.03 and Concordia University WR121 WONDERFULS

A Sense of Doubt blog post #1382 - That's Entertainment - Chicago edition - Musical Monday Mix for 1812.03 and Concordia University WR121 WONDERFULS

Hi there,

Here's another mix that starts with an assignment for my students at Concordia University who are practicing analysis for the final exam next week. For this practice in class writing, they will compare the song and lyrical content of the Jam's "That's Entertainment" with the classic American poem "Chicago" by Carl Sandberg.

This is the second practice I have hit them with. Last week's was Kate Bush on Musical Monday 1811.26.

Some more songs by the Jam follow.

If not for the comparison, I would call this mix either "Days of Speed and Slow-Time Mondays" or "Smells of Pubs and Wormwood Scrubs." I actually now have another mix named this...

Both could be subtitles for this mix. Yeah, that's a link to it on You Tube.

One other thing, it's FUNNY (in an irony way) that with this post and last week's I am asking students to analyze and interpret lyrical content of songs and music, last week, I shared my COCTEAU TWINS MIX with them (a future Musical Monday) called "Ella Megalast Burls Forever," which really had no (or little to no) discernible lyrical content in an actual language, though to call it "gibberish" is to unfairly cast shade onto the beautiful sounds of Cocteau Twins and Elizabeth Fraser.

Now, on to today's assignment and mix.

WRITING ASSIGNMENT: (updated 1911.18): What follows are two poems about cities. Read and consider both poems. Construct an analytical argument that compares and/or contrasts how the poems describe their cities ("That's Entertainment" is about LONDON). Once you have constructed an argument about the meaning of the poems, use the language of the poems to support this interpretation. Quote liberally from each and then deconstruct the language to support the interpretation.

The poems follow. For one, there's a VIDEO.

"THAT'S ENTERTAINMENT"
by THE JAM
from the 1980 album Sound Affects

A police car and a screaming siren
A pneumatic drill and ripped up concrete
A baby wailing and stray dog howling
The screech of brakes and lamp light blinking
That's entertainment, that's entertainment

A smash of glass and a rumble of boots
An electric train and a ripped up 'phone booth
Paint splattered walls and the cry of a tomcat
Lights going out and a kick in the balls
That's entertainment, that's entertainment

Days of speed and slow time Mondays
Pissing down with rain on a boring Wednesday
Watching the news and not eating your tea
A freezing cold flat and damp on the walls
That's entertainment, that's entertainment

Waking up at six am on a cool warm morning
Opening the windows and breathing in petrol
An amateur band rehearsing in a nearby yard
Watching the telly and thinking about your holidays
That's entertainment, that's entertainment

Waking up from bad dreams and smoking cigarettes
Cuddling a warm girl and smelling stale perfume
A hot summer's day and sticky black tarmac
Feeding ducks in the park and wishing you were far away
That's entertainment, that's entertainment

Two lovers kissing amongst the scream of midnight
Two lovers missing the tranquillity of solitude
Getting a cab and travelling on buses
Reading the graffiti about slashed seat affairs
That's entertainment, that's entertainment

Chicago
BY CARL SANDBURG

Hog Butcher for the World,

Tool Maker,

Stacker of Wheat,

   Player with Railroads and the Nation's Freight Handler;

   Stormy, husky, brawling,

   City of the Big Shoulders:

They tell me you are wicked and I believe them, for I have seen your painted women under the gas lamps luring the farm boys.

And they tell me you are crooked and I answer: Yes, it is true I have seen the gunman kill and go free to kill again.

And they tell me you are
brutal and my reply is: On the faces of women and children I have seen the marks of wanton hunger.

And having answered so I turn once more to those who sneer at this my city, and I give them back the sneer and say to them:

Come and show me another city with lifted head singing so proud to be alive and coarse and strong and cunning.

Flinging magnetic curses amid the toil of piling job on job, here is a tall bold slugger set vivid against the little soft cities;

Fierce as a dog with tongue lapping for action, cunning as a savage pitted against the wilderness,
   Bareheaded,
   Shoveling,
   Wrecking,
   Planning,
   Building, breaking, rebuilding,

Under the smoke, dust all over his mouth, laughing with white teeth,
Under the terrible burden of destiny laughing as a young man laughs,
Laughing even as an ignorant fighter laughs who has never lost a battle,

Bragging and laughing that under his wrist is the pulse, and under his ribs the heart of the people,

                   Laughing!

Laughing the stormy, husky, brawling laughter of Youth, half-naked, sweating, proud to be Hog
Butcher, Tool Maker, Stacker of Wheat, Player with Railroads and Freight Handler to the Nation.

I left this post under construction for a week, believing I would come back here and post the videos individually with commentary given that the Jam are one of my all-time favorite bands: a top five band.

Here's my T-shirt post on the Jam: T-shirt #346.

I listed my favourite bands in T-shirt #46 DEVO  and the Jam came out third. Here's the list:

  1. 10,000 Maniacs
  2. Cocteau Twins
  3. The Jam/ Style Council
  4. Spyro Gyra
  5. Steely Dan
  6. Pink Floyd
  7. Everything But The Girl
  8. King Crimson
  9. The Indigo Girls
  10. Talking Heads

As much as I love Devo, they do not make this list. And other bands who I love with a great burning passion, like Joy Division (see T-shirt #35), Kraftwerk (T-shirt #36), and Sigur Rós (T-shirt #12); other great bands do not break the top ten but would be in my top twenty, such as Radiohead, Roxy Music, the Clash, Dead Can Dance, and the Police.

Even though DEVO is not in the top ten favorites, they are in the list of bands or musical artists that I want to see live. A list that also includes bands I cannot see live, such as Pink Floyd, Roxy Music, and the Jam.

Anyway, I stalled out for a week on doing all that work to update this item, and so I made an executive decision. I am going to create a second post that goes song-by-song through these tracks by the Jam and shares commentary, and of course loads of pictures.

I got it sussed.

For now, it's just this, which I thought was a fairly successful assignment.

Here's the video player to the You Tube mix.

- New note - On 1807.06, I ceased daily transmission of my Hey Mom feature after three years of daily conversations. I plan to continue Hey Mom posts at least twice per week but will continue to post the days since ("Days Ago") count on my blog each day. The blog entry numbering in the title has changed to reflect total Sense of Doubt posts since I began the blog on 0705.04, which include Hey Mom posts, Daily Bowie posts, and Sense of Doubt posts. Hey Mom posts will still be numbered sequentially. New Hey Mom posts will use the same format as all the other Hey Mom posts; all other posts will feature this format seen here.

Hey, Mom! Talking to My Mother #1135 - Imaginary Imagery Nation

Hey, Mom! Talking to My Mother #1135 - Imaginary Imagery Nation - sense of doubt #1381

Hi Mom,

This post was going to be a Hey Mom reprint, then it was going to be a T-shirt reprint after I did two HEY MOM posts this last week in a row (Wednesday and Thursday), then this morning I woke up with an inspiration to write a parody of people who use platforms like GO FUND ME to have people buy things for them, like cameras, smart phones, or laptops. Not that some of these people don't need these things, and not that they don't use these things to produce cool art or do good work in the world, not that their funding efforts are not legitimate... and yet... come on, man. The Internet is already filled with hands that are sticking out palm up, isn't it?

Everywhere we turn there's another hand asking for money, like the people who shut down their Facebook wall on their birthday and instead ask us to donate to some cause instead of a birthday wish.

REALLY?

I mean, come on.

To give a birthday wish on Facebook takes me all of ten seconds maybe fewer. In some cases, it is THE ONLY INTERACTION I have with that person each year, and instead of taking ten seconds, I should donate MONEY to a CAUSE????

I mean, hey, I like donating to causes, and usually the causes need money, sure, I get it.

But I am giving people ten seconds of my time and MAYBE looking at their FB wall for a few seconds as a way to "catch up" with the person in my friends list. I am not typically sending them a gift or even a card on which I spent actual money. I mean, a few select friends and family members get that, but that's it.

So...

Enough with the hands out.

There are some people who just need to BUY THEIR OWN SHIT with their own money.

Just shoot me now.

Shoot me now.

AND THIS......

Hey, don't get me wrong.

I have supported Kickstarters, which I fund and then I GET A THING. I support artists on Patreon as long as they continue to produce work, as long as I believe in what they dom, what they stand for,  and I GET THINGS that were produced.

BUT... not everyone is producing THINGS, so not everyone deserves to be funded.

I produce a thing, and I don't ask to be funded (or load adsense content for other people with their hands out  who would pay me, either).

Whew.

Okay, so that's the thinking behind yesterday's parody.

For today, Sunday, FUNday, I just wanted to clear the SENSE OF DOUBT folder a little by sharing a few (and I mean A FEW, I am really limiting myself here) images on a Sunday FUN day.

The image topper comes from a new massage therapist I found, Angelle St. Pierre, who I think is awesome. She also leads YOGA NIDRA, in which I am VERY much interested. More on that subject later.

Keeping the FUN in FUNky, Mom, just like you wanted. :-)

Here we go. Thanks for tuning in.

And some bonus content from my good college friend's daughter who has a great '80s synthy vibe going.

Reflect and connect.

Have someone give you a kiss, and tell you that I love you, Mom.

I miss you so very much, Mom.

Talk to you tomorrow, Mom.

NEW (written 1708.27) NOTE on time: I am now in the same time zone as Google! So, when I post at 10:10 a.m. PDT to coincide with the time of your death, Mom, I am now actually posting late, so it's really 1:10 p.m. EDT. But I will continue to use the time stamp of 10:10 a.m. to remember the time of your death, Mom. I know this only matters to me, and to you, Mom.

A Sense of Doubt blog post #1380 - Please Help! Donate to Our Whiskey GoFundMe

A Sense of Doubt blog post #1380 - Please Help! Donate to Our Whiskey GoFundMe

Will you help?

We're having somewhat of an emergency in the Tower home in that these bottles of delicious Traverse City Whiskey are empty. The cherry edition is especially delightful and serves well in a mixed drink with Vernor's, which is also not plentiful in the PACNW groceries. The whiskey may have been consumed in the natural order of boozing or by a pack of rabid dogs that tore through the neighborhood earlier this year. Either way, we're out, and the nearest retailer selling it is 2273 miles away, and so you see our dilemma.

Now, this whiskey is not just any whiskey. It helps us do the good work for which we’re well known. In addition to the molding of the young minds of first year college students -- an experience many of us have shared -- we also write a daily blog that contains NO AD CONTENT. That's just free for you all to read and enjoy as our way of giving back to the universe.

And so, if you feel like supporting this good work that we do, and if you are feeling in the charitable spirit as the traditional gift-frenzied holidays approach, we have set up a GO FUND ME for you to donate to help to replenish our desperately needed supplies of Traverse City Whiskey.

Also, there are tier levels of funding support. For the people who are able to give in the upper tiers, they will earn special rewards, such as a post devoted solely to them on the Sense of Doubt blog, our Christmas ornaments with broken arms or missing feet, or other fun swag from our home, such as Ellory’s old dog tag with a phone number that is now out of service.

If I don’t reach my funding goal by January, I will shut off our Facebook wall and ask for donations to our funding project instead of Birthday wishes, trading out the one chance many of us have to interact each year for supporting a worthy charitable cause instead. We are all right with the scotch, for now, but the special cask edition of Glen Turret Ewan McGregor small batch whisky is dangerously low, so there may be another funding option later in 2019.

Please help. We need our whiskey. We cannot do our work without it!! You can make a difference! Be the change you want see.

Thank you for even considering our dire plight. Happy holidays!!
