A Sense of Doubt blog post #3245 - Weekly Hodge Podge Round-Up 2020-2023

Me with Globe 6.25 yrs
A Sense of Doubt blog post #3245 - Weekly Hodge Podge Round-Up 2020-2023

I am very proud of this post as it collects my WEEKLY HODGE PODGE posts from 2020-2023, though mostly and regularly from 2020 - to early 2022.

As a feature starting in 2015 just a few weeks after starting the blog, I began THROWBACK THURSDAYS with this post:

Thursday, September 10, 2015

At first, it was not a weekly feature; it was rather sporadic. I tried to keep it weekly at some point in 2016 but eventually it became sporadic again.

Early in the pandemic, I combined the Hodge Podge and the Throwback Thursdays for many posts, though not all.

What is a "hodge podge"? It comes from Hodge-Podge soup, a stew made from leftovers and sometimes meat, often mutton. A stew of various vegetables, barley, and whatever was on hand.

Also, "hotch potch."

It's also related to gallimaufry as a mess, a jumble, "s a confused or disorderly mass or collection of things."

As I expanded some THROWBACK THURSDAYS, I started making them hodge podges, just dumping grounds for whatever I found in my extended Internet tours, something for which I had more time for while shut-in as the pandemic locked us all down.

Eventually, I abandoned the THROWBACK element and switched over to publishing on Saturdays, giving me more time to spend a week collecting things to share.

Early in the pandemic, I started a section in the Hodge Podge on Covid-19, with a weekly update on case numbers and death, the efficacy of masks, the progress of vaccination development and then later availability, and other pertinent issues, such as all the opposition to the efforts to save lives and contain a deadly virus.

It's what brought me back to the news. I had stopped watching the news or even tuning into NPR, not reading newspapers, even before Trump was "elected" because I found world events depressing in the extreme, even during the hope-filled Obama years.

Once the pandemic started, and we were locked down, I started watching CNN (mostly though not exclusively) to keep up on the single most historic event of my life: a global pandemic.

It seemed necessary to keep up on the severity of Covid-19 and the efforts to contain it and vaccinate the population against it.

As I kept up on the pandemic situation, other historic things happened: George Floyd was murdered, which spawned Black Lives Matter protests worldwide; wildfires swept through the west, especially near us here in southwest Washington; Trump lost the 2020 election to Joe Biden and refuses to accept it; Trump tried everything to overturn the fair, free, and most accurate election of all time culminating in fomenting a mob to overtake the U.S. capitol on January 6th 2021 (three years ago today) to stop the reading of elector votes (a formality); Trump supporters erected a gallows near the capitol and were prepared to execute VP Mike Pence and other "enemies of Trump"; and those are just the highlights.

Not all the content in the hodge podges fit the "state of the hate nation" category I made to collect these and similar posts. The very nature of hodge podge concept meant that I collected all kinds of content from space science, to food and nutrition, to pop culture, and more. Not just politics.

Eventually, I started creating themes for the weekly posts and writing long preamble introductions to the series of posts with recaps of the content and often, though not always, some curation of the content.

The themes are somewhat diverse and often fitting to the news of the week or whatever is in the post. I am very proud of the themes I created.

I would always select a fitting cover photo for the top of the post and to push to social media with the link when I published.

And so here, I have collected all the official WEEKLY HODGE PODGE entries, starting on January 18 2020, before the official start of the pandemic and the lock down, and continuing through to the most recent post from Saturday, August 19, 2023, one of only TWO Hodge Podge posts in 2023.

Haven't decided if I am going to continue the feature in 2024. I have a list of links of material for sharing, much of which could be shared in Hodge Podge form on themes, as I have categories in my list like Sports and Baseball, the enivronment, Space, Music, Comics, science fiction, State of the Hate Nation, censorship, and more.

I probably love this post more than anyone else will -- due to my pride; I like that it reads like scrolling through social media with the featured image, the title, and the link.

I used one of the childhood pictures of me featured in a previous THROWBACK as the photo at the top and the one I will push to social media. Also, working on this post allowed me to fix some of the broken topper images for Hodge Podge posts. Surely, there are also broken links and broken images in many posts, but I did not take the time to check and fix them all.

I hope that if you tuned in, you will at least scroll through my "feed" here of hodge podge posts.

Thanks for tuning in.

ENJOY!

BLOG VACATION

From AUGUST 28 2021 to OCTOBER 17 2021, I take a "blog" vacation and put the blog in low power mode to focus on other things, like work. Given the time consuming nature of preparing the Hodge Podge, this meant a hiatus from the Hodge Podge for two months.

- New note - On 1807.06, I ceased daily transmission of my Hey Mom feature after three years of daily conversations. I plan to continue Hey Mom posts at least twice per week but will continue to post the days since ("Days Ago") count on my blog each day. The blog entry numbering in the title has changed to reflect total Sense of Doubt posts since I began the blog on 0705.04, which include Hey Mom posts, Daily Bowie posts, and Sense of Doubt posts. Hey Mom posts will still be numbered sequentially. New Hey Mom posts will use the same format as all the other Hey Mom posts; all other posts will feature this format seen here.
